Alejandro Bonifacio Agricultural Innovation Center a Recognition of legacy and improvement

At the beginning of 2024, we wish to commemorate the recognition of an outstanding professional and colleague at the PROINPA Foundation. Last December 3 to 8, 2023, the XIX Annual Meeting of the Andes Community of Practice, of the Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems, was held. McKnight Foundation, in the city of La Paz, Bolivia.

All projects funded by the McKnight Foundation in the Andean Region (Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia) attended the event. The PROINPA Foundation has been part of the Community of Practice (CdP) for more than 20 years, currently with the project “Revitalization of quinoa agroecosystems in arid and semi-arid areas in the Bolivian highlands.”

During the meeting, on Monday, December 4, there was a field trip to the “Fair of agroecological practices and technologies”, an event organized by the UMSA, PROSUCO and PROINPA Foundation, with the aim of exchanging knowledge between farmers, technicians and researchers regarding agroecological practices and technologies.

The meeting place between farmers from different places in the Bolivian highlands with the technicians and researchers of the community of Practice was at the Kiphakiphani Center of the PROINPA Foundation, located in the municipality of Viacha, La Paz.

During the opening ceremony of the Fair, one of the members of the CoP, PhD, was recognized. Alejandro Bonifacio for his contributions to Andean Agriculture, more specifically in the cultivation of Quinoa and native species. The recognition was managed by the Altiplano Regional office of the PROINPA Foundation on its 25-year anniversary of the institution, therefore the PhD. Rolando Oros recognized Alejandro by renaming the Kiphakiphani Center the Alejandro Bonifacio Agricultural Innovation Center.

The director of the McKnight Foundation's Global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems program, Jane Maland Cady, highlighted the renown of one of the members of the Andes Community of Practice for his contributions to science.

Also, at the opening of the CoP19 meeting, on Sunday, December 3, 2023, the video was presented: Sowing Legacies, Alejandro Bonifacio, a testimony of struggle and improvement. One of the outstanding infrastructures in the Innovation Center is the greenhouse specifically equipped with high technology for the region and the various agronomic studies that are carried out.
